Dogfish Head at Redbone's tonight . . . [30 Dec 2009|02:23pm]

[liamstliam]
If I was a beer geek (which I am)  *and* in Boston tonight (which I am not) , I would be at Redbone's in Davis Square any time after 5 p.m. for a wide variety of tasty Dogfish Head beers.

Trust me on this one.

I have a coworker who's mother is visiting and needs to get to NYC with her cat that has a carrier, problem is Jet Blue wants 100 for her flight and 300 for the pet, ridiculous, I know.

I checked Bolt, Fungwah, Luckystar etc, seems like all those buses dont take pets, anyone have any suggestions? At this point hes going to drive her back to NY but would rather not take the whole trip.

[edit] looks like delta and aa both charge 100 to carry on a pet, so maybe I'll just tell him to do that, still pretty ridiculous considering a cat is smaller than a baby and babies can be on a lap :)

Try Living Proof's No Frizz hair care line! [30 Dec 2009|01:17am]

b0st0n

[lizzielizzie]
I'm on the hunt for a new shampoo and conditioner now that my brand has discontinued the one I was using. I decided to try Living Proof's No Frizz line. Living Proof is a Cambridge-based company that has developed new anti-frizz technology that does not involve silicone. It appealed to the geek in me, plus I like to support local companies.

Unfortunately, the scent in their products triggers my allergy-induced asthma. :-( The company has very kindly offered me a hassle-free refund and told me to pass on the products to someone else. So! Anyone interested in some No Frizz shampoo, conditioner, and styling spray? I'm up in Lowell but am willing to pop the box into the mail for someone who wants to give this stuff a try.

Let me know, thanks!

If you've never heard of Jess Nevins, you may want to change that. He's an author and scholar specializing in Victoriana and Pulp Fiction.

What does this have to do with Boston?

In a recent LJ entry, Nevins has provided us with some interesting facts about early Boston life. Use these facts to amaze your friends and make them think you're smarter then you really are.

Such as:

The origin of Tremont Street: the original name of Boston was Trimountain, after Beacon Hill and the long-since-leveled Copp's Hill and Fort Hill. Trimountain became Tramount, and thence to Tremont.

The Faneuil family, of later Faneuil Hall fame, were "French Huguenots from La Rochelle, ever memorable from its siege and gallant defence, and came to America after the revocation of the Edict of Nantes."

After the death of Benjamin Franklin a statue of Faust was erected in front of Franklin's birth house.

In 1775 a man named Shubael Hewes held the title of...wait for it..."Butcher-Master General."

The beacon of Beacon Hill was "a tall mast standing on cross timbers placed upon a stone foundation, and supported by braces. Treenails were driven through the mast by which it was ascended; and near the top projected a crane of iron sixty-five feet from the base, upon which was suspended an iron skeleton frame, designed to receive a barrel of tar, or other combustibles."

If these facts are already known to you, then congradulations. If not, enjoy some historical edumacation.

Dear [info]b0st0n,

I've been trying to grow our men with heart team for the Komen 3 day walk in July. Last year, we fielded a team of 20 walkers/ crew and raised over $50,000 for breast cancer research. Doing the walk last year was one of the best experiences of my life.

Its not even the first of the year yet, but we already have a team of 9 guys. I know that we can collectively raise more money and field a larger team this year.

If you are a guy and would like to take part, you can register for the walk via the Komen page. Females are welcome to nag their SO's or other guys they know to take part. All are welcome to donate :).

Bazaar Bizarre [27 Dec 2009|11:02pm]

I purchased a $5 grab bag of 3 ceramic holiday ornaments at this year's Bazaar Bizarre, and now I've forgotten who I bought them from. Does anyone know which vendor was selling these? They were in plain brown paper packaging and just say "$5" in green marker on the paper, so I have no way to identify them.

accupuncture [27 Dec 2009|07:51pm]

hey b0st0n, any recommendations for an acupuncturist? i want some help with the quitting smoking thing, and chantix seems rather scary what with the "may cause suicidal thoughts or actions, impulsive sex or gambling, insane dreams, manic episodes" etc. i'd rather use mindfulness and might as well try needles, what the hell, i've got enough holes in me already.

mbta told me to enjoy my impending lung cancer, but being as i'm trying to be healthier i figured i'd try here. (really i just want to become one of those straight edge dicks who looks down on everyone else.

Looking for an elusive cafe [27 Dec 2009|04:57pm]

Hey,

An acquaintance told me in passing about a place called 613 Cafe in Chinatown, apparently they sell really great / cheap vegetarian subs there. I've Googled and Yelped for the place but it doesn't appear to exist. Anyone know of such a place??

Thanks.

Hello, Boston. Although it is far too soon after the holiday to be thinking about MORE food... Where is the best place in town to buy macarons? They are a French sandwich cookie made with almond paste and they look like this:

Photobucket

I've only tried the ones at Burdick's in Harvard Square, which are tasty, but a little on the smallish side and really stale. And at $1 per tiny cookie, I think they should at least be fresh!

I'd especially like to know because one of my best friends is visiting from Europe and really misses his macarons, so a nice little box would make a perfect post-holiday gift. Of course, wherever I buy them, I'm sure he will complain that they are infinitely better in France (well, duh) but I'd like to know all the same.

Thanks. :)

I've seen a few posts about the show before so I thought I'd let everyone know that Sleep No More has been extended to Feb. 7th.

You can't get a group discount for the extended shows but they have great "passes" you can buy. (even better deals for college students)

Parking on Columbus [26 Dec 2009|11:41am]

[brokenintention]
Yet another question about parking/keeping a car in the city.

I had a parking pass through Northeastern last semester but it's expiring on the 31st, and I want to explore less expensive options for keeping my car in the city. I live on Columbus Ave basically right between the Ruggles and Mass Ave T-stops, and I know there are options for free on-street parking, though I'm not really familiar with the rules for doing that. Is it worth the hassle or should I look into other alternatives? Thanks in advance.

Ho ho ho, ye merry cityfolk.

So as part of my Christmas, I'm going to give my much-abused DSLR a cleaning and tuning (and maybe a few part replacements). My question to you, Boston, is where is your favorite place to get a Nikon D50 fixed up?

Biking to east boston [24 Dec 2009|07:50pm]

b0st0n

[scienceiscool]
Hello all -

The husband and I are going to be relocating to Boston in a few months and we're currently scoping out neighborhoods. Here's the question: we were very seriously thinking about east boston until we realized that it's connected to boston proper by a very un-bicycle-friendly tunnel. Taking a bicycle across the blue line during rush hour is not allowed, right? So at certain times of day, we're not going to be able to get bicycles out that neighborhood, unless there is some ped bridge or other workaround that I'm missing. Anybody know the area and have any insight?

Tea and Tobacco [24 Dec 2009|05:44pm]

Does anyone know any good tea-shops in China town? Some place where I can score a few grams of aged Oolong or Pu-Erh? Preferably from a withered old man who barely speaks English, with a single eye.

Also, are there any decent cigar shops/tobacconist shops in the financial district area?

thx

This is kind of a shot in the dark, but does anyone know whether any Boston area gyms are open tomorrow, even if they have limited hours? Not everyone celebrates Christmas, but we basically all have the day off and I've love to get in a workout. :)

Travel from south to north shore using public transit [21 Dec 2009|02:53pm]

b0st0n

[manderleys]
Okay, I know everyone hates travel questions, but I'm in a pinch and MBTA isn't really helping me. I'm trying to get from Hinghham (south shore) to Lowell (north shore). I can take the commuter rail from West Hingham into south station, take the t (red line to orange?) to north station, and take the commuter rail from there to Lowell. My question is, is there any other way to do it? Any alternative routes that I'm missing? Also, once in Lowell, I have to rely on a bus to get me to the exact street I'm going to (http://www.lrta.com/LRTA%20Bus%20Sched%2010410Final.pdf schedule here) which apparently stops running at 7pm. Basically I'll be leaving my house at 10, arriving at my destination at quarter of four, and leaving by 7 to do the whole trip home again. This costs roughly 35 for the day and is really stressing me out... I don't have access to a car, but any other options are really appreciated!!!

(PS: I'm doing this to visit a close friend who just got out of the hospital, so it's something that's really important to me, I just want to see if there's a way I can spend more time actually with her than traveling/stressing).
